Heat Press Temperature and Time Guide for Every Transfer Type
One of the most common mistakes new heat press operators make is using incorrect temperature, time, or pressure settings. Every transfer type has specific application requirements — using the wrong settings causes transfers to fail to adhere, peel prematurely, or damage garments. This guide covers correct settings for every major heat press application.
General Heat Press Settings Principles
Every heat press application involves three variables: temperature, time, and pressure. These three factors work together — you cannot optimize one without considering the others. Always follow the specific instructions from your transfer or vinyl manufacturer, as formulations vary between brands and product lines.
The settings below are starting points based on industry standards. Adjust based on your specific products and results.
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
- Temperature: 305-320°F (152-160°C)
- Time: 10-15 seconds
- Pressure: Medium-firm
- Peel: Hot or warm peel depending on brand
HTV settings vary significantly by brand and vinyl type. Specialty HTV (glitter, foil, patterned) often requires different settings from standard smooth HTV. Always test a sample before production runs.
DTF (Direct to Film) Transfers
- Temperature: 310-325°F (154-163°C)
- Time: 10-15 seconds initial press
- Pressure: Medium-firm
- Peel: Cold peel (allow to cool before peeling film)
- Second press: Some DTF transfers benefit from a second press through parchment paper after peeling for better adhesion
Sublimation Transfers
- Temperature: 385-400°F (196-204°C)
- Time: 45-60 seconds
- Pressure: Medium
- Peel: Hot peel immediately after pressing
Sublimation requires higher temperatures and longer press times than most other methods. Use heat resistant tape to secure the transfer to prevent ghosting (blurring from movement during pressing).
Screen Print Transfers / Plastisol Transfers
- Temperature: 350-375°F (177-191°C)
- Time: 10-15 seconds
- Pressure: Medium-firm
- Peel: Hot peel immediately for most plastisol; follow specific transfer instructions
Rhinestone Transfers
- Temperature: 320-340°F (160-171°C)
- Time: 10-15 seconds
- Pressure: Firm
- Peel: Allow to cool completely before peeling carrier sheet
Flock HTV
- Temperature: 320-340°F (160-171°C)
- Time: 15-20 seconds
- Pressure: Firm
- Peel: Cold peel
Foil HTV
- Temperature: 280-300°F (138-149°C)
- Time: 5-10 seconds
- Pressure: Medium
- Peel: Hot peel
Foil HTV is heat-sensitive — lower temperatures and shorter times than standard HTV to prevent scorching.
Fabric-Specific Considerations
- 100% cotton: Use lower-end temperature ranges to prevent scorching. Consider a pressing cloth or parchment paper.
- Polyester: Use lower temperatures than cotton to prevent glazing or scorching the fabric. Especially important for athletic wear.
- Nylon: Very heat-sensitive. Use the lowest effective temperature. Test thoroughly before production.
- Blends: Start with lower-end settings and test before committing to production.

FAQ
Why is my HTV peeling after washing?
Most peeling issues are caused by insufficient temperature, time, or pressure during application. Check your settings against the manufacturer's recommendations and ensure your press is calibrated accurately.
Do I need a Teflon sheet when pressing?
A silicone pad or Teflon sheet is recommended for many applications to distribute heat evenly and protect both the transfer and the press platen. Some transfers should not be pressed through a Teflon sheet — check manufacturer instructions.
